Before the Sunday’s matchup with the Detroit Tigers today, White Sox manager Tony La Russa spoke to the media regarding two of the team’s injured stars.

La Russa addressed third baseman Yoan Moncada and catcher Yasmani Grandal, both of whom have missed games recently with ailments.

Moncada was pulled from the July 1 game against the Twins after an awkward slide into third-base injured his hand. Grandal left after the fourth inning the very next day with calf tightness.

Scott Merkin of MLB.com reported that Yoan Moncada worked out in the batting cages this morning and was “much improved from yesterday“, and is “likely [to be] ready tomorrow“.

La Russa did not offer much detail on Grandal, but did indicate a return tomorrow feels likely as well.

The situation does appear to be touch-and-go, as both players still need to be reevaluated after a day of rest.

The White Sox (49-33) kick off a three-game series with division rival Minnesota (33-48) tomorrow and getting both Moncada and Grandal back for this series would be a major win for the club. While the last place Twins may not have the record to show it, there’s no doubt they can score runs. The Twins’ 4.63 runs per game is 11th best in baseball. They also have the third-most home runs in the MLB.

Grandal and Moncada are currently the best offensive producers on the team with OPS+ ratings of 130 and 123, respectively.

Considering the tense nature of the rivalry at the moment, the Sox would certainly like to be at full strength for this one.
