Add another name to the injured list for the Chicago White Sox. Catcher Yasmani Grandal will miss 4-6 weeks with a torn tendon in his left knee, the club announced today. His official designation for the time being is the ten-day injured list, despite the aforementioned timeline.
Grandal was coming off an excellent June during which he slashed .260/.402/.603 with eight home runs and 18 RBIs in 23 games. Overall on the season, Grandal is slashing .188/.388/.436 with 14 home runs 38 RBIs.
In a corresponding move, Seby Zavala will be joining the team from Class AAA Charlotte. On the year for the Knights, Zavala is slashing .178/.291/.339 with five home runs and 15 RBIs. Today’s transaction marks Zavala’s second time reaching the majors. During his first stint with the White Sox in 2019, he logged just one hit across 12 at-bats in five games. Zavala isn’t known for his offensive abilities, but he provides the White Sox with a serviceable defensive option. And let’s face it — he is the only option to back up Zack Collins right now.
The White Sox still lead the AL Central by six games over the Cleveland Indians entering play on Tuesday. With all the injuries piling up, the MLB All-Star break cannot come soon enough for the South Siders.
