The Cubs (43-45, third in NL Central) ended their season-long losing streak at 11 games with a 8-3 win against the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday. But, the Cubs were shut out 8-0 in their next game for their 12th lost in 13 outings.
Trevor Williams will fill in Chicago’s rotation Sunday for Jake Arrieta, who was placed on the ten-day injured list with right hamstring tightness. Williams returned Tuesday from a rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa following an appendectomy in late May. He pitched 3 2/3 innings, allowing one home run and four unearned runs while striking out three and walking one.
The Cardinals (43-45, fourth in NL Central) are 3-4 in July, with a 3-1 series loss at the Colorado Rockies and a 2-1 series win at the San Francisco Giants. St. Louis took the first two games against the Giants (5-3, 6-5) then fell 5-2 on Wednesday.
The Cubs are 5-1 against the Cardinals this season, including a 2-1 win in ten innings. Chicago has outscored St. Louis 32-13 in six games, with a series-high 12 runs in the first game of the season series back on May 21 at Wrigley Field.
The NL Central rivals will also meet for three series in the second half of the season, July 19-22 at St. Louis, September 24-26 at Chicago and October 1-3 to close out the regular season at St. Louis.
