The Cubs’ second pick of the MLB Draft was used to select 3B James Triantos Jr. from James Madison HS in Virginia.
Triantos played shortstop in high school, but the Cubs drafted him as a third baseman. He was also a very good pitcher in high school. The Virginia high school player quickly rose up draft boards during the 2021 season. The 6-foot-1 infielder is a nice addition at a position that the Cubs do not have a lot of depth at. The Cubs are loaded with shortstops, but are in need of more depth at third base.
According to the highlights above, Triantos sports a .725 high school batting average, along with nine home runs. Triantos was dominant at the high school level, so it’s not a surprise he was drafted this early.
He is committed to play his collegiate baseball at the University of North Carolina. However, a $1.28 million draft slot could convince Triantos to sign with the Cubs and begin pro ball.
