Adding to their Jordan Wicks pick on Sunday, the Cubs have selected LHP Drew Gray with the 93rd overall pick in the MLB Draft. Gray is a high school pitcher out of IMG Academy in Florida.
Gray is a 6-foot-3, 190 pound pitcher with a plus fastball and slider. According to MLB.com, Gray is the 179th ranked prospect entering the draft this year. Gray was also an outfielder in high school, but the Cubs drafted him as a pitcher in the third round.
According to Prep Baseball Report, Gray has a fastball that tops out at 94 mph, impressive for a left-handed high schooler. In addition, he has a slider that sits in the high 70’s to low 80’s, a low 80’s changeup, and a mid-70’s curveball. A term used to describe Gray is “athletic”. He was a highly rated baseball player from Illinois, growing up in Swansea. However, last season Gray played at the IMG Academy in Florida.
Per Max Preps, Gray had three wins in 2021, in addition to a 1.88 ERA. The tall lefty also accumulated 41 strikeouts in 18.2 innings of work.
The left-hander is committed to play collegiate baseball at Arkansas. However, if the fit and money is right, the Cubs could get him started in their system this year.
