The Cubs continue their second day efforts by selecting OF Christian Franklin with the 123rd overall pick in the MLB Draft. Franklin attended the University of Arkansas, and was ranked the #52 prospect entering the draft per MLB.com.
Franklin is not the biggest outfielder, but the 5-foot-11, 195 pound center fielder has a lot of upside. According to MLB.com, Franklin is considered a 20-20 guy at the next level, with a good arm and good glove. His arm and glove are defined as his highest ranking metrics.
The largest concern surrounding Franklin is the swing-and-miss issues. Per Jim Callis on the MLB Draft show, if Franklin can hit consistently and improve on the strikeouts, he is “a steal” for the Cubs in the fourth round.
During the 2021 season, Franklin slashed .274/.420/.544 with 13 home runs, 15 doubles, and 54 RBI’s. In addition, he stole 11 bases and scored 55 runs in 61 games for the Razorbacks.
Franklin is projected to remain in center field at the next level. He will be an intriguing prospect for the Cubs to watch in the coming years.
