The Chicago Cubs continue their seven-game road trip Monday when they visit the St. Louis Cardinals for a four-game series at Busch Stadium.

The Cubs (46-47, third in NL Central) won their first series after the All-Star break, claiming the first two games of a three-game weekend set against the Arizona Diamondbacks in Phoenix. Chicago won 5-1 and 4-2 then fell 6-4 on Sunday. Arizona’s Merrill Kelly threw 59 strikes on 75 pitches in eight innings, and Eduardo Escobar hit a two-run home run to prevent the Cubs from the sweep.

Despite losing the series finale, the Cubs hope a series win against Arizona, who have the worst record in the MLB at 27-68, will give them momentum heading into St. Louis.

The Cardinals (46-47, fourth in NL Central) also won their opening series of the second half, but in reverse fashion at home. St. Louis lost 7-2 then won two tight games, 3-1 and 2-1, against the San Francisco Giants. Harrison Bader hit a checked-swing single off Giants first baseman LaMonte Wade Jr.’s glove to score Josè Rondón from third base for the win Sunday.

Season Series

The Cubs are 6-2 against the Cardinals this season, including a series split in each team’s final series before the All-Star break. Chicago won 10-5 in the opener then were shut out 6-0 before the third game was postponed because of rain at Wrigley Field.

The Cubs won two of three in May in St. Louis, outscoring the Cardinals 15-6 in the three-game set thanks to a 12-3 opening win. Chicago split the next two, losing 2-1 and winning 2-1.
