The Seattle Kraken will start to form their franchise with NHL talent during the 2021 NHL Expansion Draft on Wednesday. The expansion draft will start at 7 p.m. Central on ESPN2, which will mark the start of the network’s new contract with the NHL.
The Kraken had until 9 a.m. CDT Wednesday to submit their expansion draft selections. They chose 30 players, one from each team except the Vegas Golden Knights, including a minimum of 14 forwards, nine defensemen, and three goalies. At least 20 of those players are currently under contract for 2021-22 and have a value between 60 and 100 percent of the upper limit ($81.5 million) of the salary cap.
The Chicago Blackhawks exposed 13 players for the expansion draft, most notably forward Ryan Carpenter and defensemen Calvin de Haan and Nikita Zadorov.
The Blackhawks had defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk selected by Vegas in the 2017 expansion draft. The Golden Knights traded him and a 2018 seventh-round pick to the Carolina Hurricanes for Pittsburgh’s 2017 second-round pick (Jake Leschyshyn).
