Duffy was off to a strong start in 2021 before a back injury forced him to eventually end up on the 60-day IL. In 38 games this season, Duffy is slashing .278/.377/.356 with one home run and 12 RBIs. Although his numbers don’t blow anyone away, Duffy’s presence in the lineup was missed. The Cubs offense noticeably regressed when he ended up on the injured list.
As for Sogard, the infielder played 78 games for the Cubs, playing numerous positions and even appearing as a relief pitcher numerous times. Sogard’s numbers were pretty tough, slashing .249/.283/.314 this season. In addition, his 65 OPS+ is egregiously below the league average (100). He may have been a solid depth addition in the offseason, but Sogard didn’t do much to improve the Cubs roster in 2021.
The Cubs begin their series with the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday at 1:20 p.m. CDT. Friday’s game marks the start of a seven-game homestand for the Cubs as they ride into the trade deadline on July 30.
