The Chicago Blackhawks were busy on Tuesday, adding goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury and forward Tyler Johnson. However, the team decided they’re not done yet. On Wednesday, soon after free agency opened, the Blackhawks signed forward Jujhar Khaira to a two-year deal.

Khaira has played for the Edmonton Oilers since 2015-16. He is a 6-foot-4, 212-pound forward who can play both center and the wing. Khaira was never known as a massive scorer in Edmonton. His best career season came in 2017-18 when he scored 11 goals and added ten assists in 69 games. Last season, Khaira tallied 11 points (three goals, eight assists) in 40 games with the Oilers.

For a modest $975,000 cap hit, Khaira is another depth option for the Blackhawks. The team is clearly looking to get bigger and become harder to play against, so adding Khaira fits that mold. Khaira is a center, and after adding Tyler Johnson on Tuesday, it feels like fourth line staple David Kampf may be on his way out. However, that would make little sense given he was protected in the Expansion Draft last week.

It’s unlikely that the Blackhawks are done. The team traded the rights to Nikita Zadorov on Wednesday morning, and are reportedly still looking at moving Calvin de Haan. To the public, that screams they’re attempting to still make a few moves. It’s worth noting that Brandon Hagel and Alex Nylander are also still in need of new contracts. Both players were protected in the Expansion Draft as well.
