The first major domino has fallen for the Chicago Cubs. Reports indicate that Anthony Rizzo is on his way to the Bronx to join the New York Yankees. Jack Curry of YES Network broke the news.

Anthony Rizzo is an icon for the Chicago Cubs organization. After making his debut with the team in 2012, Rizzo went on have a career .272/.372/.489 slash line with 242 home runs and 784 RBIs in blue pinstripes. Rizzo has been nothing short of a consummate professional with the Cubs. He is beloved both on the field and off it. Now, the future of the present-day Mr. Cub is completely uncertain.

The Cubs will reportedly pay the remainder of Rizzo’s 2021 salary as part of the deal. This situation is similar to the Yankees acquisition of Joey Gallo, as the Rangers are paying Gallo’s salary as well. In exchange for Rizzo, the Yankees are sending RHP Alexander Vizcaino and OF Kevin Alcantara to the Cubs.

Vizcaino and Alcantara rank ninth and 12th, respectively, among the Yankees top 30 prospects, according to MLB.com.

Vizcaino, a 24-year-old righty from the Dominican Republic, owns a 12-21 record, 4.95 ERA, and 1.48 WHIP in 265.1 innings across 62 games (53 starts) during his five seasons at various levels of the Yankees farm system.

Alcantara is a 6-foot-6 outfielder who plays for the Yankees rookie ball team. In just 49 games (186 at-bats) between the 2019 and 2021 seasons in New York’s farm system, Alcantara has a .269/.325/.382 slash line with two home runs, nine doubles, and 22 RBIs.

Rizzo’s departure stings mightily for Cubs fans, and unfortunately that’s likely just the beginning of the impending fire sale at the trade deadline. Stay tuned to Cubs On Tap for further trade updates, analysis, and reaction as more moves take place.
