As the trade deadline inches closer, the Chicago Cubs are making moves. This time, the team is trading with their crosstown rival, sending RHP Ryan Tepera to the White Sox. In 43.1 innings across 43 games for the Cubs this season, Tepera has a 2.91 ERA. In addition, he is 0-2 with 16 holds, 50 strikeouts, and just 12 walks.
LHP Bailey Horn
In return for Tepera, the Cubs receive LHP Bailey Horn. Horn was drafted by the White Sox in the fifth round of the 2020 MLB Draft. Also, Horn played collegiately at Auburn, where soon-to-be Cubs starter Keegan Thompson pitched.
Horn is currently ranked as the #23 prospect in the White Sox system. However, Horn was only drafted last season, so he’s had little time to move up the ranks. That said, Horn comes to the Cubs with a solid four-pitch mix. Some of his pitches need work, but he lines up as a player that could serve the Cubs well.
Split between Low- and High-A ball this season, Horn is 2-3 with a 5.63 ERA in ten starts across 14 appearances. Horn has struggled at High-A, pitching to a 13.09 ERA in six games. However, he was really good at Low-A ball, pitching to a 2.63 ERA. Horn also has 45 strikeouts and 18 walks in 38.1 innings pitched across both levels.
Per MLB.com’s scouting report about Horn, he sounds like a prospect who will benefit from working in the Cubs’ pitch lab. Per MLB.com, his delivery suggests he can improve his control and be an effective back end starter. Worst case scenario, Horn becomes a solid left-handed reliever out of the pen.
More trades are likely coming, with Craig Kimbrel, Kris Bryant, Javier Baez, and Anthony Rizzo all potentially on the move. It will be a busy day or so for the Cubs and their front office ahead of the deadline.
