The Chicago Bulls had an exciting first day of free agency, to say the least. After bringing in both Lonzo Ball and Alex Caruso to address the team’s point guard needs, the Bulls have turned their attention to filling in other holes in the roster.

With the expected departure of Daniel Theis from the roster, there remains a major hole for a backup center to play behind Nikola Vucevic. As a result, the Bulls have taken an interest in adding Khem Birch.

Birch would be an underrated pickup for the Bulls. He was impactfully efficient this past season, averaging 11.9 points and 7.6 rebounds in 30.4 minutes per game with the Toronto Raptors after being released by the Orlando Magic. While he did play increased minutes due to the Raptors’ litany of injuries, Birch used the opportunity to showcase his skill set.

Birch’s familiarity with Vucevic could be another driving force in the Bulls’ interest. Birch was teammates with Vucevic for four seasons, so the chemistry would exist immediately.

Birch would provide the Bulls a solid depth piece off the bench. He can play effectively in the pick-and-roll game and he’s a fantastic passer. Additionally, he possesses a good-looking three-point shot, which would really help the Bulls with their spacing when the second unit plays.

In all honesty, Birch likely wasn’t someone Bulls fans had on their radar when the free agency period opened. However, after considering his unique combination of size, athleticism, and offensive skill set, Birch makes plenty of sense for the Bulls. As an added benefit, Birch won’t cost a fortune compared to other free agents on the market.
