The Chicago Cubs close out a six-game trip starting Tuesday against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.
The Cubs (51-56, fourth in NL Central) are coming off their first series after the MLB trade deadline, which they lost 2-1 to the Washington Nationals. As if trading four star players — Anthony Rizzo, Javier Baez, Craig Kimbrel, and Kris Bryant — wasn’t hard enough for Cubs fans, Chicago lost in walk-off fashion 6-5 on Sunday. The loss was especially hard after seeing Rafael Ortega have a historic day with three home runs.
The Rockies (46-60, fourth in NL West), meanwhile, did nothing at the trade deadline and opted not to move their star shortstop Trevor Story. Colorado faces a climb as steep in the NL West as the state’s legendary 14,000-foot mountains, with the Giants, Dodgers, and Padres firmly in the top-three spots. The Rockies split a four-game set this past weekend at San Diego, taking the two middle games by scoring at least five runs in each one.
