When the Rockford IceHogs announced that they had another player signing on Wednesday, the wheels started spinning, thinking about who the mystery signee could be. The announcement revealed a veteran presence is returning to Rockford.

The Chicago Blackhawks‘ AHL affiliate announced that defenseman Ryan Stanton has agreed to terms on a one-year AHL contract that runs through the 2021-22 season.

The 32-year-old blue liner skated with the IceHogs from 2010-2013, and was a part of the Blackhawks’ 2013 Stanley Cup team as a Black Ace. He has over 500 AHL games under his belt as he enters his 11th professional hockey season. In addition, he will be reunited with Hogs’ captain Garrett Mitchell, who was Stanton’s teammate during the Hershey Bears Calder Cup run in 2015-16.

In a press release from the IceHogs, Stanton expressed his excitement to return to the Blackhawks’ organization and is eager to show the young guys what he knows. On top of that, the Canadian-born defenseman explained that he can still contribute on the ice and produce.

Stanton will join Mitchell, and effectively replace Cody Franson, as veteran names on the IceHogs that will aid the young prospects in growing their game and reaching the NHL.
