Will the Bears Turn to Free Agency to Solve Tackle Dilemma?

Injuries have left the Bears left tackle position thin, but the free-agent market only has a few options.

As you may have heard by now, the Bears don’t have one left tackle on their roster with any significant experience at the position. Any left tackle experience the Bears did have on their roster walked out the door when the team released Charles Leno Jr earlier this offseason. It was already a gamble trying to convert Teven Jenkins to left tackle, and now that he’s been dealing with nagging injuries to being training camp, the Bears might be in muddy waters.

When looking at the left tackle free-agent market, it’s slim pickings.

Russell Okung (32 years old) and Jason Peters (39) are the only veteran left tackles available right now. Eight of the ten biggest names at the position came off the board opening week of free agency. If I had to pick one of the two for the Bears to sign, it would be Okung, but I just don’t know how much of a factor it would be anyways.

It looks like the Bears made another crucial mistake putting together a questionable offensive line for a first-round rookie quarterback. It will be interesting to see how they will navigate their way through their current conundrum. Will Ryan Pace and co. attempt to fix the problem with an older vet, get creative with an under-the-radar trade, or let their quarterback room bear the brunt of the punishment? Only time will tell, but exploring external options should be on the Bears to-do list considering how thin the left tackle position currently looks.
