Ever since the Chicago White Sox lost Yasmani Grandal to injury, the catcher position has been a source of stress for fans. However, Grandal is making progress toward a return to action. The switch-hitting backstop took some reps running the bases ahead of Saturday’s game at Wrigley Field.

Since Grandal went down with a torn knee tendon, the White Sox have had to rely on Zack Collins and Seby Zavala to fill the void. While neither player is a starting-caliber catcher, fans have made their voices heard: they really miss Grandal in the lineup.

Over the past few weeks, Collins, who was the next man up, has struggled defensively and at the plate, which gave way for Zavala to get an opportunity. Several impressive blocks behind the plate and a three-homer game helped the 27-year-old backstop earn more playing time as the team awaits Grandal’s return.

Grandal testing out his knee in conjunction with him expressing that he’s “feeling good” is a positive development for the White Sox. While just running the bases and taking batting practice doesn’t provide a clear-cut return date, it does show that he’s moving in the right direction. The next steps likely involve more game-related activities to see how well he would hold up during a nine-inning contest.

White Sox fans have had their patience tested with all the injuries the club suffered this season. Now, they’re waiting for their catcher and Luis Robert to come back so the lineups everyone has been dreaming about all season long can come to fruition.
