Bears Training Camp Battles: Wide Receiver

The Bears have a problem at wide receiver, albeit a good one. A camp and preseason battle will force the team to make tough decisions.

The Chicago Bears are two weeks into training camp. Which means Ryan Pace, Matt Nagy, and all the coaches are in the process of shaping the roster. As the team beings to trim down their roster ahead of the start of the regular season, it should be noted that majority of spots are already a lock. In contrast, there are still a handful of spots still up for grabs. Consequently, wide receiver is one position to watch during camp and preseason.

It’ll be interesting how many WRs the Bears actually carry into the regular season. Currently, the team has thirteen guys vying for five or six spots.

Locks

While there are 13 WRs in camp, there are only a few that are considered guaranteed locks to be the roster. Of course Allen Robinson, Darnell Mooney, Marquise Goodwin, and Damiere Byrd are locks to make the roster. Now that leaves the Bears in a predicament. Presently, that leaves nine guys competing for one or two roster spots.

Thus, begs the question: “who has the inside track”? In fact, there are a few guys who are on the bubble for a variety of reasons. Notably, Riley Ridley, Javon Wims, and Dazz Newsome come to mind. Only because the Bears invested actual draft capital to acquire these guys. Additionally, Justin Hardy could be included on this list because of his experience and the fact he can contribute on special teams.

Longshots

The rest of the list are just camp bodies trying to showcase their talents in hopes of latching on elsewhere. However, a few of the guys on this list have been making their name known during camp. While still considered long shots, it would be no surprise if one or two of them make it a tough decision for the Bears brass. For instance, Rodney Adams and Jon’vea Johnson have been making some major noise during training camp. Specifically, making connections with Justin Fields and Andy Dalton. The rest of the bunch really have an uphill battle. Thomas Ives, Chris Lacy, and Jester Weah will have to be spectacular during preseason and go above and beyond the guys ahead of them.

Camp Battle

Nevertheless, the battle at wide receiver will be exhilarating to watch through camp and preseason. These gentlemen will have a handful of practices and just three exhibition games to prove themselves. Unfortunately, roster cuts are a part of the business with limited roster availability. Nonetheless, let’s hope they make Nagy, Pace, and Mike Furrey’s job that much harder. Even if some of these guys get cut, theres always a possibility of being brought back via the practice squad. Of course, pending practice squad eligibility.

Bears fans, brace yourselves. The battle is about to be heated. Moreover, you’ll get your first chance to see these guys battle it out this Saturday. The Bears play their first of three preseason games, as they host the Miami Dolphins at Soldier Field.
