On Tuesday, Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy briefly discussed the team’s plans for their first preseason game. The Bears will host the Miami Dolphins this week at Halas Hall for joint practices, which will begin on Wednesday and lead into the two teams facing off on Saturday at Soldier Field. Nevertheless, that didn’t stop Matt Nagy from discussing his plans for playing time, especially when it pertains to the starters.

Starters

Nagy says he plans on giving the starters a few series or eight to ten plays.

Interestingly, he mentioned the deployment would be “individual-based” rather than a “first-team” or “second-team” setup. This begs the question: is Nagy going to mix and match based on the quarterback? It will be interesting to see how he handles each QB’s time with certain personnel to make sure it’s a fair competition.

Justin Fields

Now, what do these comments mean for Justin Fields? During his media session, Nagy addressed his plan of attack for the rookie QB. Nagy mentions that Fields needs to see game action to properly evaluate the rookie QB.

However, there might be a caveat to those plans. Currently, the Bears’ offensive line is depleted due to injuries. As a result, that may make Nagy hesitant to play Fields much behind a questionable line. It will likely be a matter of balancing the risk and reward, which Nagy did acknowledge at one point during the media session.

That didn’t deter Nagy from saying it’ll be full speed ahead for Fields, but he did leave room to assess the playing time based on “health and stability of the OL”.

Lastly, when asked what he wants to see from Fields on Saturday, Nagy responded, “I want him to be able to cut it loose without thinking.”

In conclusion, Bears football will officially be back this Saturday. Additionally, we’re going to see Justin Fields take the field in a Bears uniform for the first time ever. Hopefully he puts on a show for those in attendance at the lakefront and comes out unscathed.
