Notre Dame hockey head coach Jeff Jackson will have two years of the Janicke brothers.

Justin Janicke will head to Notre Dame a year earlier than expected and join his brother, Trevor Janicke, the Fighting Irish announced Thursday.

Justin was slated to join the Dubuque Fighting Saints of the USHL for the 2021-22 season, but decided to enroll at Notre Dame a year early. The Saints selected him with the first overall pick in the 2021 USHL Entry Draft this summer. He was also taken in the seventh round (No. 195 overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft by the Seattle Kraken.

Justin scored 28 points (12 goals, 16 assists) in 43 games for the United States National Team under-18 team this past season. He added 10 points (four goals, six assists) in 18 USHL games for the US National Team Development Program.

“We’re excited to announce the addition of Justin,” Jackson said in a release. “He’ll be a great addition to our program both on and off the ice while adding speed, tenacity, and offensive skill to our forward group. Most importantly, he’ll add selflessness and character and, as a Notre Dame legacy, he’ll continue the tradition of the Janicke family and Irish hockey. We are also appreciative of (Dubuque general manager) Kalle Larsson for understanding the difficult timing of this decision.”

Trevor will enter his junior season this fall. He has scored 23 points (12 goals, 11 assists) in 66 games for the Irish the past two years. The Anaheim Ducks own his NHL rights after selecting him in the fifth round (No. 132 overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft.
