Per Adam Hoge of NBC Sports Chicago, Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy confirmed that Andy Dalton’s performance will play a pivotal factor regarding when Justin Fields plays. Quoted from Matt Nagy:

“Performance and wins.”

Hoge reports that Fields is close, but the Bears remain devoted to giving Dalton a chance to prove himself as the starter for the regular season.

How does this bode for Dalton? What more do we need to know about the 10-year veteran who has started 142 career games? We know what Dalton is, and it likely is less than what he was able to give in his last Pro Bowl season, which was five years ago.

Maybe this is why Matt Nagy has decided to sit Dalton for the final preseason game against Tennessee, electing to start Fields. Dalton is still slated to start Week 1 against the Rams, but if Fields puts together a strong effort in the final preseason game, he might be able to change Nagy’s mind.
