On Tuesday, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans released their lineup as they always do on Twitter. However, ahead of Tuesday’s matchup with the Columbia Fireflies, there are two new faces in the team’s lineup.
2021 fourth-round pick OF Christian Franklin and OF Owen Caissie are both making their debuts with the Low-A Pelicans. Franklin played collegiately at the University of Arkansas and Caissie was acquired as one of the four pieces in the Yu Darvish trade during the offseason.
Tearing Up Rookie Ball
Franklin is appearing in his first meaningful game action since being drafted by the Cubs. With being a college player, it’s not surprising to see Franklin jump out of rookie ball so quickly. The No. 22 ranked prospect appeared in four games with the rookie level Cubs, slashing .455/.571/.455 with three RBIs, four runs scored, and three stolen bases.
Caissie is the first prospect acquired in the Darvish trade to appear above rookie ball. The 2020 second-round pick and No. 9 prospect in the Cubs’ system was tearing it up in rookie ball and has rightly earned an opportunity with the Pelicans. In 32 games at rookie ball, Caissie slashed .349/.478/.596 with seven doubles, six home runs, and 20 RBIs.
Both outfielders have a strong chance to be with the Cubs in the future. Tuesday is a big game for these young men as they look to rise through the minors on their way to Wrigley Field.
