Bears Waive Javon Wims, Sign DB in Corresponding Move

The Chicago Bears broke some roster news on Thursday morning. The team waived wide receiver Javon Wims and signed defensive back Dionte Ruffin in a corresponding move.

Wims was a seventh-round draft pick by the Bears in 2018. Despite being a late-round selection, Wims showed flashes of competent wide receiver play. So much so, that he was able to stick around for three years. Unfortunately for Wims, he did not see consistent playing time initially. When he got his chance, Wims did not seize the opportunity. His inconsistencies and lack of discipline are certainly to blame for his time in Chicago coming to an end.

Infamous Incidents

Wims will be always been remembered for two very specific, bad incidents.

Of course, his fight with Saints cornerback Chauncey Gardner-Johnson in 2020 comes to mind first. The dispute stemmed from Gardner-Johnson pulling Wims’s mouthpiece out earlier in the game and Wims stewing on the sidelines for over 20 minutes until the next offensive possession before retaliating.

Furthermore, Wims will forever be part of Chicago Bears lore — and not in a good way — for dropping a pass on a perfectly designed and executed play against the Saints in the 2020 NFL Playoffs.

Lackluster 3 Years with the Bears

Perhaps the most shocking part of today’s news is why it took the Bears this long to part ways with Wims. Here’s a look at the lackluster resume the contentious wideout compiled during his three-year stint in Chicago.

Now, the Bears have some clarity on their wide receiver competition with the departure of Wims and an extra secondary depth option in the fold.
