The Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox wrap up their annual Crosstown Classic series for the year with a three-game set, starting Friday at Guaranteed Rate Field.

The White Sox (74-55, first in AL Central) are the talk of the town as one of the best and most exciting teams in the MLB this year. The South Siders come home after they went 3-4 during a seven-game road trip against the Tampa Bay Rays and Toronto Blue Jays. After losing a series in St. Petersburg (7-5, 8-4, 9-0), the White Sox split a four-game set in Toronto (2-1, 5-2, 3-1, 10-7).

The Cubs (56-73, fourth in NL Central) ended their franchise-record home losing streak with a 6-4 win against the Colorado Rockies on Monday. The next day’s game was postponed to Wednesday for a doubleheader, which the teams split (5-2, 13-10).

Season Series

The White Sox swept the first three-game set against the Cubs earlier this month at Wrigley Field. The South Siders took the games 8-6, 4-0, and 9-3 to earn the sweep.

Standings Watch

The White Sox hold a comfortable nine-game lead over Cleveland for the top spot in the AL Central. The Cubs, however, are 9 1/2 games behind the St. Louis Cardinals for third in the NL Central. The divisional standings don’t mean much to the Cubs, who have the eighth-worst record in the MLB.
