Ahead of Friday’s series opener against the Cubs, the Chicago White Sox reinstated catcher Yasmani Grandal from the injured list.
In a corresponding move, the club optioned catcher Zack Collins to Triple-A Charlotte.
Grandal suffered a torn left knee tendon in a game on July 5. The injury required surgery, but Grandal hit the comeback trail in short order. The White Sox backstop began a rehab assignment at Double-A Birmingham on August 11 and moved up to Triple-A Charlotte on August 17. Grandal slashed .303/.424/.793 with one home run, three RBIs, and three walks in 11 games between the two clubs.
Prior to his injury, Grandal slashed .188/.388/.436 with 14 home runs, 38 RBIs, and 60 walks in 246 plate appearances across 63 games for the White Sox. While the veteran catcher’s sub-.200 batting average has been a point of contention among White Sox fans, Grandal’s 134 wRC+ exemplifies his offensive value.
It will be interesting to see how the White Sox utilize Yasmani Grandal down the home stretch of the season. Given the importance of catchers’ legs, the White Sox may elect to deploy Grandal at first base and designated hitter in addition to his starts behind the plate. Workload management of this variety would allow Grandal’s legs some extra rest while keeping his bat in the lineup, which would bode well for the White Sox when postseason baseball commences in early October.
