There is no denying the fact that Chicago Cubs fans love Javier Báez. The Gold Glove winner was traded at the 2021 MLB trade deadline for Cubs’ No. 5 prospect Pete Crow-Armstrong. However, since the trade, it seems like Báez and the New York Mets faithful are not seeing eye-to-eye.

Here’s the crazy thing, it’s not just Báez who’s giving the thumbs down to Mets fans. Newly acquired superstar Francisco Lindor, as well as other teammates according to reports, are also participating and even booing back at the fans.

It’s no secret that the Mets are struggling. Since acquiring the former Cub at the trade deadline, the Mets are 9-19 dating back to July 31. Cubs fans are all too familiar with Javy’s stuggles this season. In 91 games as a Cub, El Mago slashed .248/.292/.484 with 22 home runs and 65 RBIs. Yes, the power numbers are nice but everything else is concerning. However, things have been worse since his arrival in Queens. In 17 games with the Mets, Báez is slashing .210/.258/.452 with four home runs and seven RBIs. Naturally, amid a brutal stretch of games for the Mets, fans are turning on their prized July 30 acquisition in addition to the rest of the roster.

Truly, booing is a part of the game. That said, it’s fair for a player to voice their opinion. Currently in the landscape of fandoms, both in New York and Chicago, people are taking sides. Some people are defending Javier Báez (namely in Chicago) and some are agreeing that booing is normal and he should get over it.

Nonetheless, when a ball player is struggling, its easy to get frustrated. Factor in the fanbase making it feel like they hate you and that will add up. If the Mets continue their collapse (once first in the East, now 7.5 games back) then this situation could easily get worse.
