The right-hander has endured ups and downs all season but has shown flashes of elite ability as a starter in a top-three rotation spot at times.
Maples enters a bullpen that simply needs help eating innings. Throughout his career, Maples has shown he has the stuff to serve in a backend bullpen role, but he hasn’t been able to channel it into production in high-leverage spots. He sports a 2.28 ERA in 27.2 innings for the Cubs this season. This might be his final chance to prove to the Cubs he has a future with the team.
