Prior to Friday’s series opener against the Kansas City Royals, the Chicago White Sox placed right-handed pitcher Lucas Giolito on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to September 1) due to a strained left hamstring.
In a corresponding move, the club recalled right-handed pitcher Ryan Burr from Triple-A Charlotte.
Giolito suffered the injury Tuesday night in his start against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The big righty had a strong rhythm going through the first four innings until he tweaked his hamstring in the fifth frame. He tried testing it out with a few warm-up tosses, but White Sox manager Tony La Russa did not take any chances and subsequently removed Giolito from the game.
On Wednesday, La Russa noted that Giolito would miss at least one start and the club would reevaluate him on Friday. Today’s injured list designation is most likely a move to allow Giolito some rest so he’s fully healthy for the playoffs.
