The Chicago Bears announced the very unfortunate news that DL Eddie Goldman will not play week 1 in Los Angeles. He has been dealing with an injury for several days now. The long-awaited fear that Goldman would miss his first game in well over a calendar year is now a reality.
Eddie Goldman hasn’t played a down in the NFL since 2019. He opted-out of the 2020 season. He also was a big question-mark going into the 2021 season. Now that it’s official Eddie Goldman will not play against the Rams, who will take his place?
In place of Goldman, the Chicago Bears brought LB Josh Woods and DT Damion Square up to the active roster. It’s unclear how much playing time the two of them will have. With only about 24 hours left until kickoff, the Bears could use more of a defensive rotation than usual.
The Bears already have a plethora of injuries on the offensive side of the line-of-scrimmage. Now, they get a hole on the defensive side as well. Eddie Goldman will not play against the Rams but this may be more precautionary. Goldman did opt-out of the 2020 season so this could possibly be viewed more like “veteran’s rest” to help get him healthy long-term.
Obviously, the extent of the injury has yet to be disclosed. Head coach Matt Nagy likely won’t comment on the injury until next week. If he divulges any bit of information, the comments will likely come after the doctors get a better idea of what exactly is wrong.
