With the Bears’ season just hours away, fans are getting excited. Ahead of the weekend, the Chicago Bears coaching staff released a few interesting pieces of information about the 2021 campaign.

Head Coach Matt Nagy

On the Bears Coaches Show, Matt Nagy revealed the Bears will have week-to-week captains. This may be confusing to some fans on the dynamic of the locker room. Fans would understand if Dalton and Fields were competing week-to-week for the Bears starting QB role. That said, why aren’t there three other permanent captains from the defensive side of the ball?

Looking at the captains from Week One of last year, Mitchell Trubisky is the only non-returner. Allen Robison is still here, even though his relationship with the Bears may have soured. Defensive stars Danny Trevathan, Khalil Mack, and Akiem Hicks are still here, too. Fans have the right to ask questions and wonder if management is trying to push out the old guard, with new faces like Roquan Smith and David Montgomery possibly taking over. Or is there a possibility that this is a Nagy “motivation tactic” to “reward” good players with a captain role for the week. Only time will tell.

Defensive Coordinator Sean Desai

Bears new defensive coordinator Sean Desai also had a piece of news for the media this week. When asked on where Desai is going to coach from, he said he will be in the press box. For his reasoning why, Desai had the following to say:

“I like the fact that I can control more of the things. I can see all 22 [players]. I can see what I need to see. Me being able to communicate with the signal-caller on the field, that makes it much easier than it was a few years back.”

– Sean Desai, Bears Defensive Coordinator

Desai being the eye in sky will hopefully help catch the Bears blown assignments, which were prevalent in the Chuck Pagano era. Desai is putting a lot of trust in his position coaches and his senior members of the defensive core to be the motivators on the sideline. Week One against the Rams will be a very difficult test for Desai’s first game.
