Chicago White Sox manager Tony La Russa gave a few updates to the media today. La Russa said that Carlos Rodon will receive extended rest between starts. This means that Reynaldo Lopez will be making a start here and there for Rodon so he can get adequate rest before the playoffs. La Russa also revealed that Andrew Vaughn is dealing with leg soreness which is why he was off back-to-back days.

Vaughn has been struggling since July ended. In July, Vaughn was on absolute fire and one of the most productive White Sox hitters, slashing .308/.347/.516. Vaughn hit four home runs and drove in 12 runs. After his amazing July, Vaughn struggled mightily in August. He slashed .225/.340/.375. He did match his July stats for home runs and RBI though. Since August 19th, Vaughn is 7 for 61 with only one extra-base hit.

Carlos Rodon made his return to the bump for the White Sox on August 10th against the Boston Red Sox. Rodon pitched five innings, let up one earned run, and struck out seven in his return. Rodon getting rest in between starts just seems precautionary at this point. Resting Rodon and making sure he’s ready for the postseason is critical for the White Sox success.

Reynaldo Lopez will be making spot starts here and there for Rodon. Since his return to the majors, Lopez has been a pleasant surprise. In 44 innings pitched in 2021, Lopez is sporting a 2.05 ERA, .0841 WHIP, and has struck out 40. It seems the LASIK surgery has worked wonders for ReyLo.

The White Sox currently have an 11 game lead over the Cleveland Indians in the AL Central. It’s better to be safe than sorry and rest players before the postseason creeps up in October.
