The Chicago Cubs made a few roster moves ahead of their three-game series in Philadelphia on Tuesday. Most notable, Jason Heyward, fresh off being named the team’s Roberto Clemente nominee, has been placed on the 7-day concussion IL.
To replace Heyward on the roster, the team is bringing OF Trayce Thompson up from Triple-A Iowa. Thompson last played in the big leagues in 2018 with the White Sox. He is also the brother of NBA superstar Klay Thompson.
With the Iowa Cubs this season, Thompson is slashing .233/.344/.492 in 88 games. In addition, the outfielder has 21 home runs, 63 RBIs, and 48 runs scored. The 30-year-old Los Angeles, CA native will get another shot in the majors with the Cubs.
Besides for the Heyward/Thompson news, the Cubs have also placed OF Michael Hermosillo on the 60-day IL. By moving Hermosillo to the 60-day IL, it frees up a spot on the 40-man roster in case the Cubs promote someone who would need to be added to that group.
