The University of Illinois has extended head basketball coach Brad Underwood through 2027. His contract is guaranteed for the next four seasons. In addition, his contract will be top 10 amongst college basketball coaches in the country.

Underwood led the Illini Basketball team to a number-1 seed in the NCAA Tournament last season and a Big Ten Tournament title. In Underwood’s last two seasons with Illinois, the Illini basketball team is 29-11 in Big Ten play.

Underwood’s first two seasons as head coach weren’t anything spectacular. Finishes of 14-18 and 12-21 in 2017-18 and 2018-19, respectively, have been followed up by two seasons that have put the program back on the map. With Kofi Cockburn returning to the squad after losing Ayo Dosunmu to the NBA, the Illini figure to be contenders again in 2021-22.

The Illini are Underwood’s third NCAA program he has coached. The McPherson, Kansas native coached three seasons at Steven F. Austin. The program was 89-14 under Brad Underwood and made the NCAA tournament all three seasons. He left Steven F. Austin to coach at Oklahoma State, but after one solid season there he joined Illinois as their head coach.

The Illini begin their season with an exhibition game against NAIA University of St. Francis (IL) on October 23. However, the first official game of the season is November 9 against Jackson State.
