The Chicago Blackhawks signed Nolan Allan to a three-year, entry-level contract with a $870,000 salary cap hit Thursday.

Chicago selected the 18-year-old defenseman in the first round (No. 32 overall) in the 2021 NHL Draft with the Columbus Blue Jackets’ pick the Blackhawks acquired in the Seth Jones trade.

“It’s something I’ve been working towards a lot this summer,” Allan said in a video conference call. “After getting drafted, that’s the next step. Really grateful to be able to sign and get that over with.”

Allan scored two points (one goal, one assist) in 16 games this past season for the Prince Albert Raiders of the Western Hockey League. He also had five points (two goals, three assists) in five games for the La Ronge Ice Wolves of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. He added two points (one goal, one assist) in seven games for Canada at the under-18 World Junior Championship.

Allan (6-foot-2, 194 pounds) will return to Prince Albert for the 2021-22 season. He will play against other members of the Blackhawks’ 2021 class in forwards Colton Dach (second round/Saskatoon) and Jalen Luypen (seventh round/Edmonton).

Allan, Dach, and Luypen will be teammates Friday and Sunday when the Blackhawks face the Minnesota Wild in the Tom Kurvers Prospect Showcase before training camp.
