On Wednesday morning, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on numerous quarterback injuries around the NFL. Among those injuries was Andy Dalton’s bone bruise. According to Rapoport, Dalton is considered ‘week-to-week’ with the injury to his knee. If this is the case, is Justin Fields going to start this week against the Browns?
Nothing is set in stone just yet. However, with Dalton’s injury sounding more serious than originally reported, there is a good chance we see Justin Fields on Sunday in Cleveland. Matt Nagy noted in his press conference earlier this week that Andy Dalton is the starter when healthy. However, based on the reports over the last few days, he may not be healthy enough to take the field.
Andy Dalton is a good quarterback. He played admirably on Sunday in the Bears’ win before leaving with the aforementioned injury. However, Justin Fields is ultimately the future of the franchise. If Dalton isn’t 100% on Sunday, and can’t help this team win, then Fields needs to be under center and leading the offense.
On Sunday, Dalton was 9-for-11 for 56 yards and a touchdown. In addition, he rushed for 25 yards, with his injury occurring on the sideline after one of his runs. Once Fields entered the game, the rookie went 6-for-13 for 60 yards and an interception. The 11th overall pick also ran for 31 yards on 10 attempts.
The general public likely won’t know who the starter for the Bears is much before the weekend. That said, based on the reports surfacing during the middle of the week, it seems likely that the Bears’ rookie will make his first career start for the franchise.
