Bears Player Watch Week 3: Cole Kmet

With the Chicago Bears’ offense possibly looking different this week due to Andy Dalton’s injury, a player to watch this week is budding TE Cole Kmet.

With Andy Dalton‘s injury in Week Two, it looks like Justin Fields will be taking over at quarterback for a little while. He is going to have to get up to speed in this offense quickly, which means finding someone he can rely on. That could easily be Cole Kmet in this short amount of time that he has to get ready for this game.

The Chicago Bears are not going to be able to just rely on their defense to keep them alive in every game. They need to find ways to put up points on the offensive side of the field this week to keep up. Currently, this team is ranked 28th in points per game, which is the bottom five in the league. Everyone is waiting on this offense to find a groove. The best way for them to do that against this very solid Browns defense is playing the quick game.

That will not be an easy task for this team though. The Browns are home to one of the best defensive lines in the NFL and the Bears’ offensive line has had its struggles already this season. But, with Fields running the show, he will be a little more mobile than Dalton. The other issue is that rookies have a tendency to hold onto the ball longer and that can cause turnovers. They need to eliminate those even more being on the road and knowing the Browns can score when they want.

If there is one position that the Browns defense has struggled against, it would be against the tight end position. If the Bears can use Kmet in similar ways as the Chiefs used Kelce from Week One, then the offense should find success. It is well known that Nagy would love to have that style of offense, but they have struggled to get there. Even though he is only in his second season, there has been plenty of growth through all of Kmet’s games. The Chicagoland area native has shown that he can be a major threat. He is hard to bring down and continues to fight on every single play. Also, he is very reliable when it comes to catching anything thrown his way.

Here’s more proof that the Browns don’t love matching up with tight ends:

In this game, it might be tough to get the ball farther down the field against the Browns’ defense. So, they need to game plan the two big tight ends into this game in Kmet and Jimmy Graham. After that, they just need to try to control the game with a top 10 running back like David Montgomery.
