Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy met with the media this afternoon and announced what the entire city has been anticipating. Rookie quarterback Justin Fields will start Sunday against the Cleveland Browns. Andy Dalton is dealing with a bone bruise he sustained in last week’s victory against his former team.
Nagy also jumped ahead of the speculation by saying he wanted to meet with the media today specifically to avoid the distractions. The Bears’ quarterbacks have a large microscope on them and the last thing they need is more distractions. They take on a Cleveland Browns defense that is no joke.
Matt Nagy also declared that Nick Foles will be the backup quarterback to Fields.
It appears as though the Chicago Bears are taking a more conservative approach to Dalton’s injury. There is no need to rush him back to the field. Now that Fields will start, he gets a huge opportunity to win the job outright. This is indeed important because according to Nagy, Dalton is in fact their starting quarterback when he’s healthy.
Whether or not that scenario holds when Andy Dalton returns is yet to be seen. If Fields plays well, then there’s no need for Dalton to return to the helm of this Chicago Bears’ offense.
The news of the day throughout Chicagoland is that Justin Fields will start on Sunday. He draws an exquisite Cleveland defense for his first start in the NFL and gets a mountainous opportunity. In a league where teams truly take a week-to-week approach to their scheme and game plan, this really is a gigantic Week 3 for the Chicago Bears.
