‘Feels like ’08’ is a term that has been circulating around White Sox social media circles in recent days. Thursday saw the Sox clinch the 2021 American League Central Division title, their first time doing so since 2008.
While the 2021 White Sox wrapped up the division with 10 games to play, the 2008 team took it down to the wire. Tied with the Minnesota Twins after 162 games, the ’08 Sox found themselves in a one-game playoff to determine the AL Central champion.
The South Siders took care of business thanks to Ken Griffey Jr. gunning down Michael Cuddyer at home plate in the fifth inning, Jim Thome’s mammoth seventh-inning home run, and Brian Anderson’s unnecessary but smooth diving catch to record the final out of the game.
But the White Sox had another force working in their favor at 35th/Shields that night — a raucous crowd dressed in all black. Because of that unified dress theme for fans, the game that sent the Sox to the 2008 playoffs will forever be known as the ‘Blackout Game’.
Fast forward to 2021, and the White Sox plan on running it back. In a recent interview with NBC 5 Chicago, White Sox Chief Marketing Officer Brooks Boyer said the team will call on fans to wear black at Guaranteed Rate Field throughout October.
“We want to have an atmosphere that is going to really get our guys charged up, so it’s going to be a blackout at the ballpark. All October wear black, support your White Sox.”
Fans shouldn’t have any issue generating excitement as the White Sox head to the postseason in consecutive seasons for the first time in franchise history. All that’s left on the preparation checklist is to get your black jerseys, jackets, hoodies, and shirts ready for what will hopefully be a deep run into October.
“Hopefully it’s going to be a long fun ride, and it’s a tough road ahead. The playoffs are a different beast, but we’re super excited,” Boyer added.
