The Cubs (69-90, fourth in NL Central) enter the series after winning two of three against the Pittsburgh Pirates with victories of 3-2 and 9-0 in the final two games. Chicago’s first victory ended a losing streak at seven games. Four of the losses during that recent skid came against the Cardinals in Chicago, with two of the games in a doubleheader.
The Cardinals (89-70, second in NL Central) had their season-long winning streak snapped at 17 games with a 4-0 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday, but rebounded with a 4-3 win the next night. St. Louis’ win streak helped it lock up the NL’s second Wild Card spot. The Cardinals will face either the Los Angeles Dodgers or San Francisco Giants on Wednesday.
The Cubs are 7-9 this season against the Cardinals, including a 3-4 mark in St. Louis.
