Uncertainty Surrounding Carlos Rodón for Playoffs

Chicago White Sox pitcher Carlos Rodon may not be capable of pitching in the postseason. Who will take his place in the shortened rotation?

There is uncertainty in the air within the Chicago White Sox clubhouse. That uncertainty? It’s whether or not Carlos Rodón will be on the playoff roster. The White Sox will have Rodón throw a bullpen session on Tuesday to gauge where he is at.

This is not ideal for the White Sox. It almost looks eerily similar to the 2020 playoffs when the Sox didn’t have a clear option for a No. 3 starter. Rodón has been a bonafide stud in 2021 when he’s been healthy. The numbers show it. At one time, many fans and media members alike pinned him as a Game One starter. Now, there is uncertainty surrounding him being on the playoff roster! Can this dude catch a break?

2021 was the most innings Rodón has pitched since 2016, in which he pitched 165 innings. This season, Rodón went 132.2 innings with a 2.37 ERA and a 12.6 K/9. In the first half, Rodón was a model of consistency and dominant starts. In the second half? He started to wear down.

Now, Rodón was still very effective in the second half, there was just less of him. His shoulder started to bother him and he was fatigued. In his last few starts of the season, his velocity was way down. Now, the White Sox will monitor his strength and stamina to see if he’s ready for the ALDS.

If Rodon isn’t ready to go, Dylan Cease likely is going to get the Game Three start. After that? Who is it? Michael Kopech? The new and improved Reynaldo Lopez? I think it’s safe to say it will not be Dallas Kuechel who has struggled all season long. If Carlos Rodón isn’t capable of being on the playoff roster, the White Sox have a lot of hard decisions approaching.
