What to Watch For: Bulls First Preseason Game

Here’s what to watch for ahead of the Chicago Bulls’ first preseason game on Tuesday against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Chicago Bulls will play in their first preseason game tomorrow against the Cleveland Cavaliers. The game will tip-off at 7:00 p.m. CDT at the United Center. This is the first time that Bulls Nation will be able to see the new-look Bulls take the court.

I would expect the starters to only play around 20-25 minutes of action. Though, as fun as it would be to jump right into the regular season, evaluation needs to take place on some new faces. Second-year forward Patrick Williams will be out as he is nursing an ankle injury. Combo guard Coby White will miss a considerable amount of time nursing an offseason shoulder injury as well. So, who’s going to take their rotational minutes?

Troy Brown Jr.

Troy Brown Jr. came over from the Washington Wizards in the 2020-21 NBA season. He only appeared in 13 games for the Bulls. He averaged 5.5 PPG, 0.8 APG, and 3.4 RPG. The 6-foot-6 guard/forward possesses above-average playmaking ability and has the skill to get the offense into their sets. He is a must-watch due to the time Coby White will miss. His defense will fit along with point guard reserve Alex Caruso nicely on the second unit. If Brown can hit the three consistently, he could become a regular in the rotation.

Derrick Jones Jr.

Derrick Jones Jr. may be a lock to start for this team in Patrick Williams’ absence. Standing only at 6-foot-6, Jones could be thrust into the four position due to his defense and 7-foot wingspan. Jones has the ability to run the floor and finish at the rim with authority. On the defensive side of the ball, Jones is strong enough to stay in front of bigger opponents and can use his length to alter shots.

The main question to be asked is, how will the starting five look together? Will there be enough spacing on the floor in the absence of Patrick Williams? Will Lonzo Ball get the group into most of their sets? Even with Williams out, there is still a plethora of scoring options. The preseason is an excellent opportunity to gauge what lineups work together and which ones don’t.

Not every single question will be answered tomorrow night. Fans should get a look into how the new-look Bulls will run. If you’re a basketball head, this could be a “can’t miss” experience.
