It will be a “next man up” system this week for the Chicago Bears‘ offense. It seemed like David Montgomery was set to “have himself a day” against the Lions. However, that was until he went down with an injury late in the contest. But don’t worry, Damien Williams stepped right in and filled the role in a positive manner. Now, he is going to have to step up for the next few games as well. This offense is taking on a tough task this week against a high-powered Raiders team.
There is one area that the Raiders have struggled with and that’s run defense. The Bears will need to attack the Raiders defense just like they did a week ago against Detroit. They need to work the run game to open up the passing attack for Justin Fields. Also, keep an eye on another rookie, Khalil Herbert, who should see plenty of action in Las Vegas as well. That said, Williams is a very well-rounded running back that can be used in all areas. Even with missing last season, it hasn’t affected him at all.
Last week showed that Williams is the perfect veteran to have on this roster. He might not be as dynamic as Austin Ekeler, but what should the Bears expect from Williams? Expect the Bears to get the most from him, as they will need him to dig deep for a performance similar to his 2019 Kansas City days. Using him as that shifty pass catcher and balancing that with a rough style in order to pound out tough yards should yield success. He might not break tackles like Montgomery, but he will hold down the backfield until he returns.
