According to Elliotte Friedman on the 32 Thoughts Podcast, there is potential that Dylan Strome is on the move. Strome is set to make $3 million this season as likely nothing more than a third line winger.

The report makes a lot of sense. The Chicago Blackhawks completely revamped their depth entering the 2021-22 season. Additions such as Henrik Borgström and Jujhar Khaira, along with the emergences of Philipp Kurashev, Adam Gaudette, and Brandon Hagel have pushed Strome down the lineup. In addition, new arrivals such as Tyler Johnson, as well as Jonathan Toews’ return, have made Strome an expendable piece of the roster, especially as a center.

Strome’s contract simply isn’t an easy contract to hold on to. Of the team’s forwards, only Patrick Kane, Toews, Alex DeBrincat, Johnson, and Dominik Kubalik make more than Strome. The difference? Well, all five of those names are top six staples with the Blackhawks. Strome, on the other hand, is not.

There is no indication on what the Blackhawks might receive in a Strome trade. The Hawks acquired Strome by sending Nick Schmaltz to the Arizona Coyotes. Strome has outproduced Schmaltz since the trade, but the former third overall pick lacks the ideal speed and two-way game to be a top center. Now, he’s been placed on the wing and, unless he picks his offensive numbers back up, is an expendable piece as a bottom six winger.

This will be an interesting storyline to follow. The Blackhawks open their season in Colorado on Wednesday, October 13 at 9:00 p.m. CDT. With the season already upon us, an early season trade would be big news if Strome is moved sooner rather than later.
