Cubs Set Sights on Carter Hawkins As Club’s New General Manager

The Chicago Cubs are aiming to bring Carter Hawkins on board as the club’s newest general manager, as first reported by The Athletic. Hawkins has been the assistant general manager in Cleveland, the organization he has been with for the last 14 seasons.

Hawkins has risen the ranks of Cleveland’s organization through the years. The front-office veteran started out as an advanced scouting intern before climbing the ladder to become the club’s assistant general manager.

This would mark the first significant hire made by Jed Hoyer, who was the Cubs’ general manager himself before Theo Epstein left the organization before the 2021 season. Hoyer delayed his search for a GM for a year due to travel limitations stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hoyer reportedly likes Hawkins’ history of player development with Cleveland as well as the organization’s track record of drafting and developing pitchers during Hawkins’ tenure. The last pitcher drafted by the Cubs to pitch at least 100 innings for the club at the Major League level was Chris Rusin (fourth round, 2009 MLB Draft).

Carter Hawkins’ baseball playing career saw him serve as a catcher for four years at Vanderbilt University. Other reported candidates for the position are Carlos Rodriguez (Rays’ vice president of player development and international scouting), James Harris (Cleveland vice president of player development), and Jeremy Zoll (Twins assistant general manager).

Historically, Major League Baseball has discouraged teams from making front-office announcements during the postseason so it is unclear when any formal announcements would be made.
