As indicated by The Athletic earlier this week, the Cubs have officially hired former Indians assistant general manager Carter Hawkins to take over the general manager role in Chicago.

The Cubs plan to introduce Hawkins on Monday, October 18 at Wrigley Field. He becomes the Cubs’ 16th general manager in franchise history.

Hawkins spent 14 seasons within the Indians’ front office, including the last five seasons as Cleveland’s assistant general manager. Based on his track record, he brings experience in various front-office roles to Chicago.

Cleveland first hired Hawkins as an advanced scouting intern in 2008, which he turned into a full-time role the next season. Hawkins then became the Indians’ assistant director of player development in 2010 and director of player development in 2015 before assuming the assistant GM role.

The Indians have five players in the MLB Top 100 prospects list entering next season. Jed Hoyer hopes this move will propel the Cubs to become one of the better franchises in terms of developing young pitching, something they have noticeably struggled to do with the current and previous regime.
