History Lesson: The Last 29 Years of Bears-Packers

The last three decades have been miserable for Bears fans when it comes to the Packers. The two-headed monster of Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers has helped Green Bay dominate Chicago over the last 29 years.

The Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers are set to square off for the 203rd time on Sunday. The 2021 season will mark their 100th year as rivals. In fact, these two teams are only a 208-mile drive apart. It only takes a three-hour and 20-minute drive up or down Interstates 94 and 43.

However, the gap between these two teams only seems that far. For the better part of the 100-year rivalry, the Bears have been the superior team. But for the past three decades, the Packers have flipped the script and changed their fortunes. Since 1992, Green Bay erased a 23-game deficit in the all-time series. Now, the Packers are up six games on the Bears.

  • 1921-1992: Bears led series 80-57-6
  • 1992-2020: Packers lead series 101-95-6

Over the span of 29 years, the Green Bay Packers have dominated the Chicago Bears by going 44-15-0, which includes a meeting at the 2010 NFC Championship game. The Bears have been outscored 1,020 to 1,458 during this period, an eye-popping 438-point differential. In retrospect, that’s roughly 15 points per season and 7.5 per matchup since they play twice a year.

The Quarterbacks: Packers

During their reign of dominance, the Packers have only deployed two quarterbacks. Of course, both are or going to be Hall of Famers. The first guy Bears fans remember vividly. However, it’s the second guy that still actively haunts Bears fans’ nightmares.

  • Brett Favre (1992-2007; 16 seasons)
  • Aaron Rodgers (2008-current; 13 seasons)

The Quarterbacks: Bears

Meanwhile, during those 29 years, the Bears have seen 19 QBs come through that door and walk out the same door. It’s truly a stark contrast between a team with two and a team with 19 signal-callers. As a result of the lack of stability at arguably the most important position in sports, the Bears have suffered. They’ve been torched by both Favre and Rodgers so many times it’s hard to even keep up. So much so, that Aaron Rodgers couldn’t name all the Bears QBs he’s faced during his career.

Here is a list of Bears QBs who have started against Brett Favre (as a member of the Packers):

  • Jim Harbaugh
  • Steve Walsh
  • Dave Krieg
  • Erik Kramer
  • Steve Stenstrom
  • Cade McNown
  • Shane Matthews
  • Jim Miller
  • Kordell Stewart
  • Chad Hutchinson
  • Rex Grossman
  • Brian Griese

Now, those who have started against Aaron Rodgers:

  • Josh McCown
  • Jay Cutler
  • Brian Hoyer
  • Matt Barkley
  • Mike Glennon
  • Mitch Trubisky

Additionally, one Bears QB has been privileged to be here during the overlap. This QB has the honor of saying he started against both Favre and Rodgers.

Bears vs. Packers: 19 Quarterbacks

The table below contains a breakdown of how each Bears QB and his respective team has done against Green Bay during the Favre/Rodgers era.

While it’s a very small sample size, Cade McNown (2-0) and Brian Griese (1-0) had the best winning percentage against Green Bay. In addition, Rex Grossman and Kyle Orton both sport a 3-1 record against the Packers. Grossman had the benefit of playing with a stellar defense in 2005 and 2006, which contributes to his +25 point differential. It also happens to be the best differential amongst all 19 quarterbacks.

Bears vs. Packers: Soldier Field or Lambeau Field

After further breakdown of nearly the past three decades, it appears the Bears have performed better at Lambeau Field. Although, we’re splitting hairs at this point. It was still dreadful regardless of where they played.

  • Soldier Field: 30 games, 6-24 (.200), 513 points scored, 738 points allowed, -225 point differential
  • Lambeau Field: 29 games, 9-20 (.310), 507 points scored, 720 points allowed, -213 point differential

Bears vs. Packers: Brett Favre, Aaron Rodgers, and Brett Hundley?

Over the course of 29 years, the Bears have faced only three different Packers starting QBs. Of course, there are the obvious two of Favre and Rodgers. However, the third one was Brett Hundley, who filled in for Rodgers when he was hurt.

What Happens Now?

Well, 2021 is year 30 of the Packers’ QB dominance. Aaron Rodgers is still with Green Bay… for now. Meanwhile, the future of the Bears is Justin Fields. Thus, Fields becomes the 20th quarterback for the Bears during this run of the Favre/Rodgers era. Hopefully, for Chicago’s sake, Fields is the antidote and reverses the course in this rivalry. Although, the rookie QB knows all too well the pressures of a historic rivalry between two teams. He witnessed firsthand Ohio State vs. Michigan in the collegiate ranks.
