Chicago Sky Defeat Phoenix Mercury, Win First WNBA Championship

It’s the city of Chicago’s first professional sports championship since the Cubs won the 2016 World Series.

Chicago Sky WNBA Champions

The Chicago Sky won their first WNBA championship in franchise history, defeating the Phoenix Mercury in four games with an 80-74 victory Sunday afternoon at Wintrust Arena.

The Sky, the No. 6 seed in the eight-team field, defeated the No. 7 Dallas Wings 81-64 and No. 3 Minnesota Lynx 89-76 in the first two single-elimination rounds. Chicago then upset the top-seeded Connecticut Sun in four games in the semifinals to reach the WNBA Finals for the first time since 2014. The Sky, who were founded in 2006, were swept in three games by the Mercury in the 2014 Finals.

Chicago’s Kahleah Copper won WNBA Finals MVP, averaging 17 points per game in the series. The Sky acquired Copper from the Washington Mystics in the Elena Delle Donne trade in 2017. The Mystics selected Copper seventh overall in the 2016 WNBA Draft.

The Sky received a big boost during the offseason with the homecoming of two-time WNBA MVP and Naperville, Illinois native Candace Parker, who was the 2016 WNBA Finals MVP for the Los Angeles Sparks. Parker is joined on the Sky by two other Chicagoland natives in Allie Quigley of Joliet, Illinois, and Dana Evans of Gary, Indiana.

The Sky won the title in their third straight playoff appearance with coach and general manager James Wade at the helm. Chicago lost in the second and first rounds in their first two years with Wade, who was the 2019 WNBA Coach of the Year.

It’s the city of Chicago’s first professional sports championship since the Chicago Cubs won the 2016 World Series.
