The Chicago Bulls won their first season opener in five years behind Zach LaVine’s 34-point performance Wednesday night in Detroit.
Hiding in the box score was Chicago native and former Illinois basketball standout Ayo Dosunmu leading the Bulls bench with seven points. He also hauled in two rebounds and blocked one shot in his rookie debut.
Dosunmu’s seven points turned out to be a huge boost for the Bulls in the second half as they squeaked out a six-point victory.
Considering the guard depth on the Bulls roster, few expected Dosunmu to see much playing to start the season. However, head coach Billy Donovan didn’t waste any time, especially after Troy Brown Jr. committed three personal fouls in the first quarter.
It’s just one game, but it’s not every day former Illini standouts make an impact on an NBA roster. Ayo Dosunmu looks to be a big energy piece to the puzzle for the Bulls this year.
Former Iowa star Luka Garza also got a DNP by coach’s decision over on Detroit’s end, too. Illini fans love to see that.
