The Chicago Cubs have claimed finesse lefty Wade Miley off waivers.
This development comes as a bit of a surprise not because the Cubs are taking a chance on him, but instead from a Reds perspective. Cincinnati placed Miley on waivers after he posted a 3.37 ERA in 163 innings pitched in 2021.
Miley has spent time in Arizona, Boston, Baltimore, Milwaukee, Houston, and Cincinnati in his 10-year career.
He will be 35 years old next season, but it’s definitely not a bad investment for the Cubs as a low-risk, high-reward waiver claim.
With Nicholas Castellanos opting out of his contract and Miley now off to the Cubs, it seems as though the Reds are playing with pennies on the dollar.
Miley threw a no-hitter on May 7 in Cleveland. He finished the season with a 6.0 WAR, per Baseball-Reference.
Starting pitching was the Cubs’ biggest weakness throughout the 2021 season. This move not only helps shape the North Siders’ rotation, but it also provides depth if they so choose to be big players in the free-agent market.
