The Chicago Bears are getting some reinforcements on offense heading into a Monday Night Football matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Bears will activate running back David Montgomery from injured reserve.

Montgomery has been on the shelf with a knee injury for the past few weeks. The third-year running back suffered a sprained knee against the Detroit Lions in Week 4. Initial reports indicated Montgomery would miss 4-5 weeks. That timeline aligns perfectly with his likely return for Week 9 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Since Montgomery landed on the IR, rookie RB Khalil Herbert stepped up and proved his worth for the Bears. Meanwhile, Damien Williams has been mostly unavailable due to a Reserve/COVID-19 list stint and a knee injury of his own.

In the four games Herbert has started, he logged the following numbers:

  • Week 5: 18 rushes, 75 yards (4.17 avg)
  • Week 6: 19 rushes, 97 yards (5.11 avg), 1 TD; 2 catches, 15 yards (7.50 avg)
  • Week 7: 18 rushes, 100 yards (5.56 avg); 5 catches, 33 yards (6.60 avg)
  • Week 8: 23 rushes, 72 yards (3.13 avg); 2 catches, -4 yards (-2.00 avg)

Overall, Herbert ran the ball 78 times for 344 yards and one touchdown. In addition, he tacked on nine catches for 44 yards. On average, Herbert saw 19.5 rushes for 86 yards per game and 2.25 catches for 11 yards per game.

Now, the expectation is that Montgomery and Herbert will comprise a two-headed monster in the running game.
